KPLC AWARDS TOSHIBA TRANSFORMER TENDER

Utility firm Kenya Power has awarded a Sh3.4 billion contract to Toshiba Corporation for the supply of 8,000 transformers over a period of three years.
Kenya Power’s chief executive Ben Chumo said the contract is largely driven by large scale programmes such as the Last Mile Connectivity and maintenance work adding that the supply will however be on a need basis.
“The criteria for award was largely based on ability to deliver quality equipment and capacity to distribute,” said Mr Chumo.
Other key bidders were Technical Associates of India, Tana Lake of Tanzania and Jiangzu of China. Fourty companies applied for the contract from which 30 were shortlisted.
“The key reason why the rest of the 40 bidders were dropped is the new specifications we demanded for that would make transformers last longer,” said Benard Ngugi, head of supply chain at the listed power distributor. Mr Ngugi said part of the criteria was to choose manufacturers of transformers, hence locking out local firms.
Toshiba will fulfil the order over the three years from this June, and will install the transformers in the transmission and distribution and substation network that connects power plants and end-consumers in Nairobi, Mombasa and surrounding regions, according to a statement on the website of the Japanese engineering group.
