Sonu elections in 2016 were marred by accusations of bribery that resulted in
students rioting in April 2016 to protest the declaration of Babu Owino as their student leader for a third time.
Students on April 4 went on rampage, stoned motorists along University Way and burnt Sonu offices to protest the declaration that Owino was the winner of university elections.
Owino has been at the helm of Sonu for three times in 2011, 2014 and 2016.
More than 200 students were expelled from the institution after the violence. Some were pardoned but others were expelled from the institution.
Owino’s opponent, Michael Jacobs Odhiambo who lost the election to Owino is among the students who are challenging expulsion from the university.
