In different countries women have different
limits installed upon them during their periods.
At times these lead to serious health
problems or lack of education and
opportunities in life.
#1 is water
In Nepal women are not allowed to touch
water when menstruating. This way they
cannot maintain a proper hygiene of their
bodies and at times experience thirst. Other
people have to fetch them water instead and
that may take up all day to accomplish.
Women are forced to work at night and do
their choirs in the darkness.
#2 is a mirror
Neither mirror nor comb is available to women
with period in Nepal. It is not the biggest
problem for these girls, but it highlights the
attitude of the society to female bleeding. As
if the woman becomes cursed and unfit to
even look good during these special days.
#3 is their family
While menstruating a woman gets cast out of
family meals! She has to eat alone.
#4 is her village
These women have no right to wash their
bodies anywhere near the village. Even young
girls are forced to go far away in the woods
and find water for their personal hygiene.
#5 is food
The ladies are deemed to be unclean while
having their periods. So, they get banned from
cooking food! She cannot touch any pots or
anything in the kitchen or eat certain kinds of
food.
#6 is school
Small female students have no personal
hygiene items needed to keep going to school
during the periods. So, they skip lessons and
at times completely abandon their studies.
#7 is religion
No woman with menstruation is allowed to be
present or take part in religious practices. And
that happens all over the globe.
All these things make women feel as if they
are cursed through the bleeding instead of
being blessed, as it makes them able to bear
children. Such attitude also ruins female self-
esteem and makes them disrespect their own
bodies.
