MARWA: CORRUPT POLICE ARE PROTECTING DRUG LORDS

Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa has today (Friday) accused a section of police officers within the region of protecting drug barons and undermining the government’s efforts to fight insecurity in the area.
Addressing journalists at Uhuru na Kazi building accompanied by regional police boss Francis Wanjohi, Marwa said some corrupt security officials were to blame following the increasing number of youth engaging in drug abuse.

This comes only a few months after he accused police officers manning various roadblocks within the county of allegedly harassing motorists and taking bribes.
On the other hand, the coast regional coordinator confirmed the arrest of a suspected drug baron along the busy Mombasa-Nairobi highway at Mariakani area today (Friday).
Marwa said there are many drug barons operating in the coastal region, adding that it remains difficult to apprehend them because they are being protected by corrupt police officers.
At the same time, he urged coast regional police boss Francis Wanjohi to take disciplinary action against the few corrupt officers, saying drugs had a connection with the mushrooming of illegal criminal gangs, among them Wakali Kwanza and Wakali Wao in Mombasa County.
On his part, Coast regional police boss Francis Wanjohi admitted that drug menace remains a security threat and if not addressed soon it will affect development and future generations in the county.
He noted that during the last police recruitment exercise at the coast, the government was unable to meet the required number of recruits in Mombasa County due lack of minimum academic qualifications.
