BABU OWINO ARRESTED

University of Nairobi students leader Babu
Owino has been arrested for hate speech and
inciting violence.
Babu Owino who is chairman of the Students
Organisation of Nairobi University
(SONU), allegedly made threats against
Gatundu South legislator Moses Kuria on
Monday, June 13.
The threat against Kuria by Owino was after
the fiery MP had claimed Raila Odinga could
be killed.

The SONU boss is being held at Kilimani
police station for questioning concerning his
remarks.
Nearly 2000 students from the University of
Nairobi blocked Valley Road as they marched
to the police station.
The students demanded the release of Babu
Owino and the arrest of Gatundu South MP
instead.

Babu Owino is accused of inciting violence
when he claimed that he will use his
henchmen to hunt and deal with the Gatundu
South MP.
Owino also told Kuria that Raila is not his
mother’s boyfriend and that he has no right to
address the CORD leader as he did.

Barely a month ago the controversial student
was arrested for assault and was arraigned in
court in May 5, 2016.
Owino was accused of beating up his
university election rival Mike Jacobs with a
video of the incident going viral.
The arrest of Owino comes after several high
profile arrests of politicians accused of
spreading hate and inciting their followers.
On Monday, June 13, Moses Kuria appeared
at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations
(DCI) to record a statement on his comments
against opposition leader Raila Odinga.
On Tuesday, June 14, Machakos Senator
Johnstone Muthama and Suna East MP
Junnet Mohamed were arrested for hate
speech with the Suna East MP being arrested
in a dramatic showdown outside Nation
center.
