MAKONDE PEOPLE'S JOURNEY TO KENYAN CITIZENSHIP

Kenyan president, Uhuru Kenyatta, has on 14th Oct 2016 ,  declared the Makonde people of Kenya as Kenyan citizens thus adding another tribe to the already existing 42 tribes of kenya. Most of you have either never heard of them or read about their cousins in Mozambique. Many don't know how they got to Kenya or even their existence.

The ethnic Makonde community were brought
in to work on sugar plantations at the defunct
Ramisi Sugar Factory.
They did not return to their motherland when
the factory collapsed over three decades ago
and live in the derelict houses in former
plantations.
Historically, they have been isolated and
despised by local Muslims. Many of them
resorted to palm wine tapping and sale after
the sugar industry collapsed.
Local chauvinists have held myths that the
Makonde practiced cannibalism, thus
enhancing their isolation. Legally, they live in
limbo because although the Kenyan authorities
have not expelled them, it has not given them
citizenship either. But in fact they are renowned for their artistic culture throughout the world made famous by the exquisite Makonde carvings.

A couple of years ago, Mozambican embassy
officials in Kenya visited the area and tried to
persuade them to return to their motherland
but none of them was willing to do so.
Recently, Mozambique embassy officials
entered discussions to try and register them
to vote in the country’s October polls.
Their insist to stay in the Kenyan coast has finally bore fruits as after years of cry to the Kenyan government to acknowledge them as citizens, and even a demonstration at the Kenyan president's residence. The Uhuru government has promised to give them Kenyan citizenship and grant them Kenyan ID cards as they officially become assimilated into the Kenyan tribes.

UHURU CONDEMNS FKF

President Uhuru Kenyatta has criticized FKF bosses over the cheating fiasco which saw the national under 20 team banned by CAF from continental qualifiers.
The President, addressing Federation boss Nick Mwendwa and other senior officials at State House Friday stated that the decision to send overage players for CAF qualifiers was unnaceptable.
" Lets not sugar-coat this issue. it is cheating. Its breaking the rules," he stated.
He continued that the Federation has to do better next time.
" If the federation doesn't know the rules, that is carelessness. This cannot happen again. It cannot be allowed," he added.
The Federation boss Mwendwa stated that the Federation would pay more attention in future.
The Under 20 team was disqualified from the qualifiers for the African championships after fielding ineligible players versus Sudan in March.
As per CAF rules, only players born on or after January 1, 1997 are eligible to play in the tournament. But in the Kenyan team there were five players who were born before that date.

UHURU KENYATTA SUPPORTS MIRAA(KHAT) FARMING

President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced that the government will set aside Sh1 billion to assist miraa (khat) farmers after the commodity was banned in the European Union markets.
President Kenyatta said he instructed the Cabinet to include the fund in the budget to support miraa like other cash crops.
The President spoke at State House , Nairobi on Friday when he signed into law a Bill that categorises miraa as a cash crop.
The move opens doors for the crop to benefit from government budgetary funding.
The Act obligates the government to establish mechanisms for promotion, production, distribution and marketing of miraa as a cash crop.
The historical assent, witnessed by Deputy President William Ruto and political leadership from Meru, gives legal backing for farmers and traders to grow, harvest and sell Miraa produce in the country without any hindrances.
President Kenyatta said the funds will be availed through the Ministry of Agriculture.
He directed Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett to meet with leaders from Meru to discuss and agree on the mode of disbursement.
The President regretted the tribulations which farmers are undergoing since the ban and assured them of government support.
President Kenyatta also announced the formation of a new task force to look into issues affecting miraa farming.
Speaking at the same function, the Deputy President said the Jubilee government is commitment to resolving development challenges in the Meru region.
Mr Ruto urged county governments to ensure prudent use of public funds.
